Baking the Perfect Insurance Cake: A Free Review Story

Insurance is like baking a cake—both require the right ingredients and a precise process! Recently, I undertook a free review for a client in the professional services space. The process began with an initial 15-minute meeting to set expectations. This first meeting aimed to listen and understand what was needed by the client.

The client had Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance in place and nothing else, which left me wide-eyed and worried. In the back of my mind, I was thinking, "Where is the Cyber insurance? Where is the Management Liability insurance?" So, I did what I thought would benefit the client and started putting the ingredients together to start baking the cake.

Step 1: The Recipe Book

In order to put the insurance program together, you first need the recipe book. The recipe book comes with many years of experience, and I'm not just talking about product knowledge; I'm also referring to people skills and communication. Listening, has easily become the single biggest lesson I have learned and one of the greatest tools in both personal and business life. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason—clearly, nature intended us to be excellent listeners!

Step 2: Gathering Ingredients

This is where I started to collect the information and engage with the client effectively. I obtained proposal forms for all the insurances they currently had and needed. In this particular case, I asked for proposal forms for a combined Professional Indemnity and Public Liability (Flour), Management Liability (Baking Soda), Cyber (Sugar), Corporate Travel (Unsalted Butter), and Business Insurance (Salt). I know what you thinking, this is going to be one boring cake, where is the icing?

Step 3: Mixing the Ingredients

The mixing process required obtaining quotes from the market and approaching insurers that provide excellent and comprehensive cover and have a reputation for terrific claims management. Think of this step as sifting and blending—getting rid of lumps and ensuring a smooth, consistent mix.

Step 4: Preparation and Baking

This step involved putting together a presentation that pointed out gaps in cover and explained why the products were suitable for their occupation and activities. This is akin to preparing the cake and getting it into the oven. Just like baking, it required patience and attention to detail—no one likes an underbaked cake or a half-baked insurance plan!

Step 5: Delivery and Icing

Delivering the cake involved, icing, cutting it up into small pieces and making the information digestible (get it? Hehe) and as easy to understand as possible. This process ensured that the client received the best advice, quotes, and information delivery specifically tailored to their business. When I finished baking this cake, I took it out of the oven and delivered it with pride, knowing that I had not forgotten any ingredients.

When it came to the meeting, I was well-prepared, having simplified the information to make it easy for everyone to understand. Despite initial nerves, the delivery went fantastically well. The ladies I presented to were very happy with the outcome and understood how the gaps in cover could potentially affect their business. They appreciated my approach—after all, who doesn’t like a well-baked cake?

A few days later, I received an email from the company asking me to go ahead with all that I had proposed. I was thrilled that they had decided to protect their business by investing in more cover. The acknowledgment from the client that the presentation was insightful gave me a great sense of pride. The cake was eaten, with nothing left over.
